Brazilian Society of Trichology

The Brazilian Society of Trichology “SBtri” is a non-for profit organization whose aim is to disclose, inform, teach and promote scientific research connected with the study of hair and scalp. It is headed by Dr. Luciano Barsanti, a renowned doctor and trichologist who, with years experience in non-invasive hair restoration, has become an international reference in the specialty.

Understanding hair loss

Several are the causes of Alopecia (baldness) or abnormal hair loss. Among those, androgenic causes (more frequent in men), hormone causes (more frequent in women), psychiatric disorders, depression, major surgeries, stress, medications, etc. stand out. Examination by a doctor and trichologist is pivotal if proper diagnosis is to be made. Remember: The sooner the diagnosis is made, the bigger the chance for baldness to be reversed.

9th World Congress for Hair Research

Dr. Marcia Cecilio from Instituto do Cabelo participated in November of 2015, in the 9th World Congress for Hair Research, in Miami – USA, sharing scientific news with Doctors, Trichologists and researchers from all around the world about stem cells as a definite solution for hair loss. Other emerging therapies for different kind of alopecia were also extensively dicussed during the 4 days of the congress.

Stem Cells – The Ultimate Solution for Baldness

The future of hair restoration involves the use of stem cells also known as pluripotent.
Those are cells capable of becoming different cells of different kinds, and so, the possibilities of cure, restoration and aging reversion are uncountable and fascinating.
Although the process is not as simple as it seems, there already exist methods, at the lab level, capable of restoring the epithelial component of the hair follicles – the dubbed epithelial cells.

A follicle is made up of such epithelial cells and of dermal papillae. When one loses hair one loses those two types of cells; therefore, a portion of the equation is already being solved!

Those epithelial cells, produced from stem cells, when implanted in immunocompromised mice, restore skin cells and hair follicles. They even enable a shaft that is similar to the hair shaft to be formed, which, in the future, may enable restoration of the hair.

What does make these studies even more promising is that there is an immense supply of stem cells, i.e., they will be able to be used for different cure purposes in a very same individual.

SBTri keeps up with the advances achieved from the use of stem cells in hair restoration, through association with the major research centers worldwide. Be ready for the news!
